 We were fortunate to have Mr Malcolm Kerr-Muir, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon from Addenbrookes Hospital Cambridge join us for this Cataract camp.

As a small NGO we believe it is vital to link with other organisations, and this link between Cambridge expertise and Dr Gloria Patrick- Ferife,  Founder of Eye Care at Your Doorstep helps secure this service for the blind of the Niger Delta. We are most grateful for their help and expertise.

 A triage camp was held in October to screen those suitable for surgery, each patient identified invited to attend on the day of the surgical camp.Following surgery each patient is reviewed two weeks later to monitor for complications.To date all operations have been without problems as care is taken to identify those who are most suitabl;e and will benefit most from surgery.

 Careful observation of this lady's eyes demonstrates the white opaque lens in the right eye from existing cataract and the left eye post cataract removal, now showing the 'red reflex' of the normal eye, reflecting the retinal vessels from the back of the eye in response to the camera's flash.

An initially reluctant patient she was ecstatic at the gift of new sight and this photo captures the moment she rediscovered the world around her..........

From a study of the Delta communities 54% of blindness was attributable to Cataract, 18% from Glaucoma secondary to Cataract, 6% Pyeriygium, 6% Post seg. disorder, 6% Phthisis Bubi,6%Uncorrected Aphakia, and 4% Corneal opacification, the latter often from previous trauma and blindness resulting from native treatments.

These figures are extracted from;

Reaching the Unreached:A Community outreach in the Creeks of the Niger Delta, a presented Paper by Dr Patrick-Ferife of Unghelli Hospital, and Founder of EyeCAYD, that was written from experience in the first of our joint eye camps in April 2005.
