To really understand the issues of a community, importing ideas from outside is both naive, rather patronising and ultimately doomed to failure.

We closely liaise with community representatives and by using local workers we began to understand both the problems and needs of the communities from within.

A community survey visited every house both to establish baseline statistics, create initial relationships and better understand the needs of the people.

The lack of educated parents, lone parents, poverty, alcohol, nutritional poverty, political instability, intercurrent disease, native practices all conspired to create adverse factors for bringing up healthy children.

The following programs underpin our work to improve maternal and child health.

  • Weekly mother and baby clinics
  • Breast feeding awareness and advocacy
  • Antenatal care and regular monitoring
  • Use of record cards
  • Vaccination programs
  • Weekly nutritional teaching
  • Free intra-partum care at the Clinic
  • Free mosquito nets
  • Clean drinking water advice and health and safety in the home
  • How to recognise early signs of serious illness
